چکیده

We present a novel approach for the compensation of temporal brightness variations (commonly referred to as flicker) in archived film sequences. The proposed method 1is motivated by fundamental principles of photographic image registration and provides a substantial level of adaptation to temporal but also spatial variations of picture brightness. Additionally our scheme provides an efficient mechanism for the adaptive estimation of flicker compensation profile, which makes it suitable for the compensation of long duration film sequences while it addresses problems arising from scene motion and illumination using a novel motion-compensated greylevel tracing approach. We present experimental evidence which suggests that our method offers high levels of performance and compares favourably with competing state-of-the-art techniques for flicker compensation.

Flicker Compensation for Archived Film Sequences Using a Segmentation-Based Nonlinear Model

A new approach for the compensation of temporal brightness variations (commonly referred to as flicker) in archived film sequences is presented. The proposed method uses fundamental principles of photographic image registration to provide adaptation to temporal and spatial variations of picture brightness. The main novelty of this work is the use of spatial segmentation to identify regions of h...

Spatially Adaptive Flicker Compensation for Archived Film Sequences Using a Nonlinear Model

We present an algorithm suitable for the compensation of flicker in archived film sequences. The proposed method is a substantial improvement over our previous work which adopted a nonlinear approach to flicker compensation motivated by fundamental principles of photographic image registration. The improvements include reliability weighting, spatial adaptation and motion compensated weighting. ...

Non-motion-compensated region-based dirt detection for film archive restoration

Theodore Vlachos University of Surrey Center for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing Guildford, GU2 7XH, United Kingdom Abstract. A novel non-motion-compensated method is proposed for dirt detection in archived film sequences. A confidence measurement extracted from raw differences between current frame and each of the previous and next frames is used to exploit the temporally impulsive nature...

Flicker Parameters Estimation in Old Film Sequences Containing Moving Objects

The aim of this study is to improve the accuracy of flicker parameters estimation in old film sequences in which moving objects are present. Conventional methods tend to fail in flicker parameters estimation due to the effects of moving objects. Our proposed method firstly utilizes an adaptive Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based method to detect the moving objects in the film sequences, and comb...

Efficient detection of temporally impulsive dirt impairments in archived films

We propose a novel approach for the detection of temporally impulsive dirt impairments in archived film sequences. Our method does not require motion compensation and uses raw differences between the current frame and each of the previous and next frames to extract a confidence signal which is used to localize and label dirt regions. A key feature of our method is the removal of false alarms by...
